What are the qualifications to become a Real Estate Agent?
You must be 18 at the time of application, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent, and you must successfully complete the 55-hour Sales Agent Course, then successfully pass the Sales Agent State Exam. We offer the required Sales Agent course. You must pass this course with a grade of 75% or better. You will then have one year in which to pass the state exam with a grade of 75% or better. After passing the state exam you will have one year to affiliate with a real estate company and apply for the Sales Agent license with the state.

My Real Estate Sales Agent License expired. What do I do?
If your license has expired, do not continue practicing. The Maine Real Estate Commission requires that you get an Associate Broker license to continue as a licensed real estate agent. To obtain an Associate Brokers license, you need to have had an active Sales Agent license for at least two of the five years preceding the application, and successfully completed the Associate Broker course with a grade of 75% or better. My Real Estate Sales Agent License is ABOUT to expire. What do I do?
The Maine Real Estate Commission requires that you get an Associate Broker license to continue practicing. To qualify for the Associate Broker license you must pass the Associate Broker Course with at least a 75%. After that, there is no state exam required so once you’re 30 days away from your Sales Agent license expiration you can apply for the Associate Broker license. If you can’t find an Associate Broker course to complete before your license expires but you don’t want to have any break in practicing, you can request an extension on your Sales Agent license from the Commission by filling out this form and following the instructions included.
How many hours of continuing education do I need to renew my license?
To renew your Associate Broker, Broker, or Designated Broker license, you will be required to complete at least 21 hours of continuing education for your renewal every two years. If you recently passed your Sales Agent Course (congratulations!) and you’re looking to register for your state exam, check out Pearson Vue to find a testing location and time that work for you. The fee to register for the exam is $85. If you need to schedule an exam to complete a course that you are currently enrolled in with the Real Estate Institute of New England, please contact the office.
I took my Sales Agent Course over a year ago. Does this matter?
The Maine Real Estate Commission requires that you pass your state exam within a year from the last day of your course. If you do not meet that deadline, you will be required to complete the Sales Agent Course again.

How do I obtain a real estate appraisal license?
In order to obtain a real estate appraisal license, students must pass 75 hours of AQB-approved qualifying education consisting of Basic Appraisal Principles, Basic Appraisal Practices, and the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) course. The courses are required to be completed within the 5 years immediately preceding application for the trainee license. In addition, there is a four-hour supervisory/trainee course that is also required before working with a supervisor can begin. There must be arrangements made for the trainee to work under the direct supervision of a licensed appraiser who meets the requirements outlined at mainelegislature.org.
